The turmoil around us can make us wonder what the future holds and whether we are living in the end times. In times of uncertainty, it can be difficult to hold on to hope, especially when our circumstances make us question God's love. But we must not measure His love by what we experience today. Through the book of Malachi, we are reminded of God's everlasting love and called to respond by honoring Him with our best and living faithfully as we prepare for Jesus' return.
GOD LOVES YOU
Sometimes we become so focused on our painful circumstances that we struggle to recognize God's love in our lives. In the book of Malachi, the Israelites questioned God's love for them, but He reminded them of His enduring love through His covenant with Jacob (Malachi 1:2-3). Like the Israelites, we can allow pain, disappointment, and uncertainty to make us doubt whether God truly cares. But His love is not determined by our feelings or circumstances. He loves us because of who He is, and His love is everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3). We must be careful not to exchange the assurance of His love for temporary pleasures or allow our present struggles to keep us from trusting Him.
HONOR GOD WITH YOUR BEST
If we truly understand how much God loves us, our response should be to honor Him with our best. In Malachi, God rebuked the priests for offering blind, lame, and sick animals instead of sacrifices worthy of Him (Malachi 1:6-8). Their offerings revealed hearts that had grown indifferent toward God. They continued their religious activities, but serving Him had become a burden rather than an expression of love (Malachi 1:12-14). In the same way, our faith should be reflected in how we treat others, nurture our relationships, and make our daily choices. When we only give God our leftover time, energy, and attention, we fail to recognize the honor He deserves. As Jesus reminds us, our love for Him should lead us to obey His commands (John 14:15). We honor God not merely through outward religious activities, but through sincere worship and willing obedience.
BE READY FOR HIS COMING TODAY
Knowing that God loves us and understanding that we are called to honor Him should lead us to live faithfully in preparation for Jesus' return. Jesus reminds us to stay alert because no one knows the day or hour of His coming (Matthew 24:42, 44; 25:13). Readiness is not something we put off until the last minute. It is demonstrated through the way we live each day. As Paul reminds us, we are to offer our lives as living and holy sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1). We cannot keep postponing our obedience until life becomes more convenient, because tomorrow is never promised. As the prophet Amos warns us, we must prepare to meet our God (Amos 4:12). Let us respond to God's love by giving Him our hearts, our time, and our best today, living each day faithfully as we await His coming.
