Oftentimes, what makes the Christian life difficult not putting into practice the things we already know. The book of James challenges us that the proof of our faith is seen by how we live, especially in the face of trials. It's easy to claim to be Christians, but we are reminded to examine the means and motives by which we prove our faith to be real. Our means should be living out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12-13), and our motive to obey should be fueled by our love for Christ. Real faith, then, obeys God’s word, and results in the following:
CLEAR TRANSFORMATION (James 1:19-21)
It is within God’s will for us to be born again through His living and enduring word (James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23). But when we hear God’s word, do we truly listen and live transformed lives? James instructs us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger (vv.19-20). This means consistently paying attention to God’s word and pausing before reacting to what others say about us, especially in anger. “Anger is not in itself sinful, but… it may be the occasion for sin.” (R.C. Sproul) Our responses reveal if we are living transformed lives or not; and by our deeds we either deny God or become witnesses to the faith we profess (Titus 1:16). Let us receive God’s word in humility so that we may produce fruit for God’s glory (James 1:21).
Challenge: Will you receive God’s word today in humility, that it may be implanted in your heart and bear fruit in your life?
CONSISTENT APPLICATION (James 1:22-25)
We are called to practice what we preach — not sometimes, but all the time! Hearing God's word is one thing, but learning is not complete until it is applied. Jesus Himself said that true disciples are those that continue in His word (John 8:31-32). The Bible is the only mirror that reflects how God sees us and, at the same time, transforms us. When we abide by it, being effectual doers and not forgetful hearers, we become blessed in what we do! (James 1:25)
PURE RELIGION (James 1:26-27)
Many people claim to be religious, but a faith built on unguarded words and deceitfulness is worthless (v.26). Pure religion is living out God’s commands. We are to bless others, not just through distant sympathy for the needy, but by sharing the gospel to a world lost without Christ (v.27). We are to reject the things of the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life (1 John 2:15-16). And just as a bride remains pure while waiting for her groom, God calls us to be holy, righteous, and set apart as we await our Bridegroom, Jesus (James 1:26-27).
As we live in anticipation of Christ’s return, may the evidence of our faith be visible as we live in obedience to His word (Revelation 19:7-8)!
