We conclude our series on Galatians with the call to live as truly spiritual people. Spirituality is often misunderstood, with many measuring it by activity, zeal, knowledge position, gifts, or sacrifice. But Scripture shows that none of these alone define a truly spiritual life. Genuine spirituality is a heart fully surrendered to Jesus, guided moment by moment by the Holy Spirit. What does true spirituality look like in the life of a believer?
COMPASSION FOR OTHERS
Galatians 6 begins with a call for those who are spiritual to restore those caught in sin with gentleness. The word “restore” evokes healing, mending, and rebuilding, meaning that spiritual people are not to attack or condemn those who fall to sin, but to lead them back to the Lord while guarding their own hearts. The succeeding verses remind us to bear one another’s burdens, fulfilling the law of Christ, but also humble us by reminding us that everything we have is by grace alone.
ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY
True spirituality includes personal responsibility (Galatians 6:4-6). Each believer must examine their own work and bear their own load, fulfilling the assignments God has given them. Romans 14:12 reminds us that we will each give an account to God. As such, Paul reminds us to share what we have received, not just materially but also spiritually, by following his example of generosity and self-support (Acts 20:33-35, 1 Corinthians 9:18).
MAKE WISE CHOICES
Every choice we make is a seed with a harvest (Galatians 6:7-10). We cannot deceive God or escape the consequences of our actions. Esau’s choice to trade his birthright for immediate pleasure illustrates the danger of sacrificing eternal value for temporal pleasure (Genesis 25:29-32; Hebrews 12:16-17). Sowing in the flesh leads to corruption; sowing in the Spirit leads to eternal life. We must persist in doing good even when the harvest is not immediate (Galatians 6:9).
EXALT JESUS
When we live with compassion for others, assume responsibility, and make wise choices, Jesus is exalted. Paul concludes his letter to the Galatians by declaring that he boasts in nothing except the cross (Galatians 6:14-15). True spirituality leads not to self-glory but to Christ’s glory alone (1 Corinthians 1:23-24). Through the cross, Jesus secured our salvation and spirituality. In return, we ought to live in a way that exalts Him
