God’s law was never intended to be a checklist to accomplish to earn salvation, yet many of us still live our lives as if God’s love for us depends on flawless obedience. It’s a burden that can often lead to legalism and discouragement. But in Galatians, Paul clarifies that the law’s purpose was never our salvation. Rather it is a window to our brokenness and sinfulness, which points to our need for Jesus. Salvation comes not through rule-keeping, but through faith. God gave us the law to guide us toward Christ, where real freedom is found in the grace of the gospel alone.
REMEMBER – How You Received God’s Grace
Can you recall how your relationship with Jesus began? Paul reminded the Galatians that, like Abraham who received God’s promises by faith and was declared righteous, they too received the Holy Spirit not by works, but by faith (Galatians 2:3). Deuteronomy 27:26 and Galatians 3:10 remind us that all who rely on the works of the Law are under a curse. Because none of us can keep God’s law perfectly, we all stand guilty. But Christ redeemed us by becoming a curse for us on the cross that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith (Galatians 3:14). Salvation is and always will rest on God’s promise and grace.
REALIZE- Why God Gave the Law
The law exposes our transgression. It is like a mirror, revealing sins we couldn’t see on our own, but unable to remove those sins. Instead, the law retrains evil, upholds moral order, and shows us our need for Jesus (Galatians 3:22-23). Like a tutor, it guides us towards Jesus, showing us that we are no longer under the law but under grace (Galatians 3:24-25).
RECEIVE – Your New Identity in Christ
The Law leads us to Jesus, but only faith unites us with Him. When we wholeheartedly believe in the gospel of Jesus, we take on our new life as God’s children, clothed with Christ, and one family regardless of our background (Gal 3:26-28). When we belong to Christ, we receive a new identity as heirs of the promise (Galatians 3:29).
