Have you ever treated God like a vending machine? Sometimes, that’s how we approach God. We put it in a certain amount of “coins,” or prayers, thinking that if we say the right things, we’ll get what we want. But prayer isn’t about getting our way, it’s about aligning with God’s will. Jesus Himself taught us that prayer is about seeking God’s agenda first before presenting our needs! David prays in a way that reveals the posture of His heart before God – a posture of awe. In 2 Samuel 7, we learn three things that caused David to pray in this way.
God’s Amazing Blessings
In 2 Samuel 7:18-22, David sat before the Lord in awe saying, “Who am I Lord...that You have brought me this far? He remembered God’s track record in his life – from a shepherd to a king. His posture of worship came from reflecting on God’s faithfulness. In the same way that God preserved David even as he was being chased by Saul, when we take a good look, we’ll notice that even in trials, God shows up. David’s example reminds us to stay still, abide, and reflect on how far God has brought us. Have you counted your blessings lately?
God’s Wonderful Promises
David didn’t just thank God for the past; he also thanked God’s for His future promises. God said He would build David’s house into a lasting dynasty, and that David’s son, Solomon, would be the one to build God’s temple (2 Samuel 7:4-7, 11-13). God even promised to be a Father to Solomon, to discipline him when needed, and to never remove His love like He did with King Saul (2 Samuel 7:14-15). Knowing God’s promises help us pray with awe and trust. What promises are you holding on to?
God’s Everlasting Character
David ends his prayer with awe at God’s greatness (2 Samuel 7:22). In the same way, we are called to pray in awe not just for what God gives, but because of who He is. The God who created the universe, filled with billions of galaxies, knows us all by name (Isaiah 43:1). The greatest promise God made to David was not just about Solomon, but about an eternal kingdom fulfilled in Jesus, our Savior and King (2 Samuel 7:16; Matthew 1:1, 5-6, 16). Today, as His people, we get to share this good news with others.
Prayer is an invitation to trust, worship, and walk closely with Jesus. Let’s pray in awe of God.
