DEVELOP A DIVINE PERSPECTIVE
In 1 Corinthians 1:1-3, Paul introduces himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ, emphasizing that his calling was not self-appointed but by the will of God. By establishing his divine authority, Paul lays the groundwork for addressing the conflicts in the Corinthian church. He addresses the believers in Corinth as those who have been sanctified (made holy and set apart) in Christ and as saints by their calling. Despite their current struggles, Paul sees them through the lens of their potential and what they can become in Christ.
This divine perspective reminds us that God doesn't see us solely based on our past mistakes and sins. Once we have received forgiveness and salvation through faith in Christ, we are seen as new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). God is actively at work in us, progressively transforming us to be more like Christ (Philippians 1:6). Embracing this divine perspective allows us to see others not just as they are now, but also in light of their potential and the work God is doing in their lives. It fosters a sense of hope and compassion, enabling us to extend grace and encouragement to those in conflict.
ADDRESS THE ROOT PROBLEM
In 1 Corinthians 1:10-11, Paul addresses the issue of division within the Corinthian church. Factions had formed based on loyalty to different leaders, leading to quarrels and disputes. Paul urges them to be united in Christ Jesus, emphasizing the importance of biblical unity. Biblical unity does not mean uniformity in every opinion or preference, but it calls us to be united in our mission, our love for God, and the essential aspects of our faith.
Identifying the root problem is crucial in conflict resolution. Superficially addressing conflicts without digging deeper into the underlying issues often leads to temporary solutions or exacerbates the problem. By seeking a biblical perspective, we can discern the core issues causing the conflicts. It may involve pride, selfishness, unresolved past hurts, miscommunication, or misunderstandings. Once the root problem is identified, we can approach the situation by speaking the truth in love, seeking reconciliation, and working towards understanding and healing.
Furthermore, Paul's caution against being driven by human allegiances reminds us to prioritize Christ above all else. When conflicts arise, it is essential to evaluate our motives and ensure that our loyalty and allegiance lie with Jesus. Aligning our lives with Christ's teachings and example leads to a lifestyle characterized by love, compassion, and unity with others.
FOCUS ON JESUS
In 1 Corinthians 1:14-18, Paul emphasizes that his ministry is not centered on personal recognition or boasting but on the central message of the cross of Christ. The cross is the symbol of God's redemptive work and the foundation of our salvation. In a culture where people valued eloquence, wisdom, and human achievements, Paul underscores the surpassing significance of the message of Christ crucified. Our salvation and worth are found in the name of Jesus Christ alone.
Focusing on Jesus is essential in resolving conflicts because it redirects our attention from ourselves and others to the One who is our ultimate example and Savior. People may disappoint us, and conflicts may arise, but Jesus remains the constant source of hope, strength, and guidance. Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to fix our eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him, and it reminds us that in following His example, we can overcome challenges and conflicts in a manner that honors God.
Philippians 2:2-4 provides a beautiful calling for believers to be of the same mind, purpose, and love, setting aside selfishness and embracing humility. It challenges us to consider the humility of Jesus, who willingly took on human form and suffered for the salvation of humanity. By imitating His humility and focusing on Him, we can navigate conflicts with a selfless and compassionate attitude, seeking unity and reconciliation in Christ.
