JUNE 29, 2025 SERMON SUMMARY
Fear and worry are common struggles. Worries about finances, family, health, and even the future often grips our hearts, but in Philippians 4:6-7, Paul reminds us not to be anxious, but to pray and give thanks, trusting that God’s peace will guard our hearts when we do. Fear is unavoidable, in fact even David wrestled with fear, but Psalm 27 shows us how David turned to God amid trouble. Let’s learn from the example of David how true prayer drives out fear.
Anchor in God’s Character
David begins Psalm 27 by declaring that the Lord is his light, salvation, and stronghold. He doesn’t ignore his fear. Instead, he confronts it with faith (Psalm 56:3-4). When problems arise, our tendency is to want to fix them ourselves. But David teaches us to yield control and look first to who God is.
Even when Saul tried to kill him, David chose not to retaliate (1 Samuel 24:10, 12, 15), choosing instead to trust in God’s justice and timing. Surrendering to God through faith in His unchanging character disarms fear. Fear shrinks when we believe in the goodness and sovereignty of God.
Seek God’s Presence
Ultimately, David’s desire wasn’t for just safety or success. Psalm 27:4 reveals that David prays for one thing: to dwell in God’s presence and behold His beauty. His heart wasn’t set on the power that the throne could offer him, a throne promised to Him by God no less, but on intimacy with God.
David’s focus on worship reveals the depth of his relationship with God. To David, fullness of joy was found in God’s presence (Psalm 16:11). Even in the face of death and uncertainty, David found confidence and victory by staying close to God (Psalm 27:5-6). To pray in a way that overcomes fear, we must seek God’s presence. In return, God’s promise is to reveal Himself to those who seek Him with all their heart (Jeremiah 29:13).
Keep Waiting in Faith
David’s intimate relationship with God didn’t exempt him from fear or pain, but instead of running from God, David ran to God. David continued to seek, trust, and wait on the Lord (Psalm 27:9-10). In his waiting, David was active, not passive (Psalm 27:11-12), obeying God even it was hard.
Psalm 27 ends with a powerful encouragement, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage.” Waiting deepens our faith, and as David later attests in Psalm 34:8, those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Fear loses power when we anchor in God’s character, seek His presence, and keep waiting in faith. Like David, we can trust that even in the darkest moments, God is with us, and His plans are always good. The best is indeed yet to come.
