Do you know what your purpose in life is? Knowing your purpose matters because living the wrong one can waste your life. Much like mistaking a tablet for a weighing scale will break it, when we live for the wrong mission, it can have tragic consequences in our lives. Jesus, who has all authority, gave us our purpose: to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). You can’t follow Christ without following His command, so how do we embrace God’s mission for us?
Have the Eyes of Jesus
In Matthew 9, Jesus saw the crowds and looked at them with compassion. How do we perceive others? Often, we tend to focus on the problems or burdens they bring into our lives, but Jesus sees them differently. The word for compassion used in the Bible was splanchnizomai, which means being moved from the depths of one’s being. It’s a word that early Christians had to invent because true compassion like Jesus’ is rare, even among believers. It’s only when you have Jesus that you can have this kind of compassion, and it’s a compassion that the Lord values from us towards others (Matthew 9:12-13).
Have the Heart of Jesus
Jesus sees us – all of us. Even the problems that weigh us down. Unlike the Pharisees, who had knowledge but lacked love, Jesus had a heart that longed for the lost (Luke 15:14). More than a mastery of the Bible or religious knowledge, Jesus calls us to have a heart for people like He did (Luke 15:1-2). He told the story of the lost sheep to demonstrate His heart and the heart we ought to have, too (Luke 15:3-4).
Have the Urgency of Jesus
The harvest is ready (Matthew 9:37), and God is calling us to move with urgency! All around the world, people are open to hearing about Jesus. But if we don’t share now, the opportunity may be lost. That’s why Jesus calls us to pray for more workers (Matthew 9:38), and when we pray, we become part of the solution (Luke 10:2-3). Jesus is sending you out. The question is, are you doing your part in bringing in the harvest?
What do you see when you look at the people around you? How might you need to change your perspective to see people the way Jesus sees them?
How do you develop a heart of compassion?
What steps can you take this week to respond with urgency? Why is prayer such an important part of this?
