MAY 3, 2026 SERMON SUMMARY
Many of us carry wounds from our parents. Some are quiet and lingering, while others feel deep and difficult to move past. Because of this, the call to honor them can feel confusing and even overwhelming. Yet God, in His wisdom, gives us a command that is both challenging and full of purpose. He calls us to honor our father and mother, not because they are perfect, but because He is shaping our hearts through our obedience. This command comes with a promise, that it may go well with us, reminding us that God’s ways are always for our good.
WHY SHOULD I HONOR MY FATHER AND MOTHER?
God’s command to honor our parents trains our hearts to honor Him. Scripture shows that how we respond to our parents often reflects how we respond to God. When we choose to love and respect them, we begin to understand what it means to live under His authority. This kind of honor builds a strong foundation for our lives and influences how we relate to others. Even when our parents are imperfect, God calls us to respond in a way that reflects His character and trust that obedience leads to His blessing.
HOW CAN WE HONOR OUR PARENTS?
Our roles may change as we grow older, but our calling does not. Obedience is part of childhood while honor continues throughout our lives. We may not always agree with our parents, but we are still called to treat them with respect and dignity. At the same time, Scripture reminds parents to lead their children with love, patience, and wisdom. God’s design invites both parents and children to reflect His heart in the way they relate to one another.
WHAT DOES HONOR LOOK LIKE?
Honor is expressed in everyday choices: in the way we speak — choosing words that build up rather than tear down — and when we listen with humility and remain open to learning. Honor also grows through gratitude as we recognize what our parents have done, even if it is imperfect. It is lived out when we care for them and take responsibility, especially in seasons when they need support.
HOW CAN I ACTUALLY HONOR MY FATHER AND MOTHER?
Honoring our parents can feel most difficult when we carry pain. God does not ask us to ignore what is wrong or to remove wise and healthy boundaries. Instead, He calls us to release bitterness, to choose forgiveness, and to entrust justice to Him. This is not something we can do on our own strength. We need God to transform our hearts. Through Jesus, we are given new life and the ability to respond differently. He honored the Father completely and showed care for His mother even in His final moments. As we follow Him, honoring our parents becomes more than a duty. It becomes an act of worship that reflects the grace we have received.
