MAY 10, 2026 SERMON SUMMARY
God gave us the Ten Commandments so we would learn how to worship Him rightly. Every command reveals His heart and teaches us how to respond to Him with love and obedience. The sixth commandment says, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Many of us quickly assume we have obeyed this command because we have never physically taken a life. Yet God’s command reaches far deeper than outward actions and reminds us that every human life is sacred in His sight.
RESPECT GOD
Life is valuable because God Himself is the Giver of life. He formed man from the dust and breathed life into him (Genesis 2:7). Every breath we take comes from Him (Acts 17:25, 28), and we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:13–14). Since every person bears the image of God, every life carries dignity and worth (Genesis 9:6). God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16–19), and His justice is always righteous and perfect. To honor God is to respect the life He has created.
RESPECT LIFE
The first murder in Scripture began long before Cain killed Abel. It began in Cain’s heart through anger, jealousy, and unchecked sin (Genesis 4:8). Jesus later taught that hatred and anger themselves place us in danger of judgment (Matthew 5:21–22). In the same way, 1 John 3:15 reminds us that hatred is closely tied to murder because sin always begins within. This is why words, bitterness, unforgiveness, and hostility are never small matters before God. Harsh speech can deeply wound people, and resentment can quietly destroy relationships. The sins of David against Bathsheba and Uriah also reveal how personal sin creates lasting consequences for others.
GIVE LIFE
True transformation begins when we encounter Jesus. The apostle Paul once approved of violence (Acts 8:1), but after meeting Christ, his life was completely changed. He became a servant of the gospel and learned that “to live is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). When we understand that our lives belong to God, we begin to live differently toward others. God calls us to “choose life” by loving and obeying Him (Deuteronomy 30:19–20). Through Jesus, we receive forgiveness and redemption (Ephesians 1:7–8). While the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, Jesus came to give abundant life (John 10:10). As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect that life through forgiveness, grace, and the message of the gospel so that others may also find life in Him.
1. In what practical ways do people today “commit murder” without physically taking a life, and how can we guard our hearts against this?
2. Can you share an example --- biblical, historical, or personal --- where one person’s sinful action caused long-term pain for many others? What does this teach us about the seriousness of sin?
3. As we “Respect God” and “Respect Life”, how do we “Give Life” to others?
MEMORY VERSE:
You shall not murder.
(Exodus 20:13)
